Mary J. Hafer, 93, of Elkview, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
She was a Postmistress for the US Postal Service, retiring from the Elkview Post Office. Mary was one of the founders of Hafer Funeral Home, having worked with her husband since 1950 until his death in 1986. She continued to work at the funeral home helping families until recently. She was a member of the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Pinch where she served on the Session, as an Elder, a member of Circle One and a Shepherd.
The Elk River Community meant a lot to her and she dearly loved helping families and people from the community. She had a passion for helping and providing for children in the community and volunteering in the local schools.
Mary was a 50 year member of the Thelma Chapter 24 of the Eastern Star, Clendenin, the Rebekah Lodge 57, and served on the Council for the Elk River Community Center. For many years she served as President of the CAMC Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary and a member of the Auxiliary Board; and was named State Volunteer of the Year. She was the oldest living member of the Elkview Bridge Club, which was a close knit group of women; who played once a month at different homes for the last 55 years.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, J. Edward “Ed” Hafer; parents, Charles Jones and Alta Allen Jones; brothers, Olen E., Deb, and Mike Jones; son-in-law, Charles H. Thaxton; sister-in-law, Audrey Hafer Hunt.
Mary is survived by her loving family, daughter, Sarah Hafer Thaxton; grandchildren, Lisa Dickens and husband, Tracy, Linette Thaxton and fiancé Eb “Shug” Thomas, John Hafer Thaxton and wife, Tina; great grandchildren, JT Thaxton and wife, Sierra, Joel David Thaxton and Amy Grace Thaxton; sister, Betty Workman. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Service will be 12:00 pm, Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Elkview Baptist Church with Pastor Lee Swor and Pastor Bobby Sizemore officiating. Entombment will be in Elk Hills Memorial Mausoleum, Big Chimney.
Visitation will be from 5-8pm Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Elkview Baptist Church; also there will be a one hour visitation prior to the funeral service at Elkview Baptist Church.
