Obituary for Jimmy Dean McVey

Jimmy Dean McVey 81, of Pinch, WV, passed away Tuesday, June 21, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a resident of Mullens, WV, for 31 years prior to moving to Pinch in 1987.

Born January 25, 1935, at Amigo, WV, he was the son of the late Dewey McVey and Rebecca Neely McVey. He was proceeded in death by three brothers, Harold, Pete, And Dewey, a sister Elizabeth Marie and a nephew, Harold, Jr. (Bo).

He was a retired Director of the WV Workers Compensation Fund. Prior to this he was the Compensation and Benefits Director at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation of Beckley. He was a 1952 graduate of Stoco High School. He was also a graduate of Beckley College.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edna Gregory McVey, and a son Jim and his husband, Bruce of Lewes, Deleware. He is also survived by a special niece whom he thought of as a daughter, Rebecca McKinney Zupanick, of Pineville, her husband Joe, and their children Emily and Joseph, who referred to him as pawpaw. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Jessie McVey of Amigo, nephews James McKinney, Jr. and Shelia (wife), and Mike McVey and Cindy (wife) and nieces Debbie Meadows and Josh (husband), Darlene Chambers and David (husband) and several great nieces and nephews.

Jimmy loved and cherished his wife's family throughout their courtship and 60 year marriage. He is survived by his wife's sisters Mary Anderson of Princeton, Alma Blankenship of Clear Fork, Norma Marcum of Vacaville, CA, and Rema Kidd of Bassett, VA. Other survivors from his wife's family include several sister-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews across multiple generations.

Jimmy was a member of the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Pinch where he was an elder. Prior to moving to Pinch, he was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church of Mullens, WV, where he was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He served in the US Army for two years and was stationed in Germany. After his time in the army, he served several years in the WV Air National Guard Reserves. He was a member of Beni Kedem Shrines of Charleston, the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, A.F & A.M. Mullens Lodge 151 (50 year plus member), the Grand Chapter of West Virginia Admiral Number 50, the Bluefield Commandery Number 19 Knights Templar, a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose Mullens Lodge 750 and a member at large of the Elk Lions Club.

Jimmy was an avid golfer and enjoyed his golfing trips with buddies. He enjoyed traveling with his family and watching WVU Mountaineer Sports. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his pets.

A celebration of his life will be held at on Saturday, August 6, 2016, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 80 Saint Andrew Lane, Pinch, WV, , with the Reverend Jim Walther officiating, on Saturday, August 6, 2016.

Visitation will be held, one hour prior to the service.
