Obituary

Emily Blackwell, 66, of Hurricane, formerly of Elkview, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at CAMC Teays Valley after a long illness.

Em will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother and a friend to everyone she met. She loved gardening, chatting on the phone with friends and sitting on her front porch, drinking her famous sweet tea. She had more friends than you can count and loved them all. But her true love was her two grandsons.

Emily is preceded in death by her father, Samuel Mark Campbell. She is survived by her beautiful mother, Elizabeth Anne Clemmer Campbell of Hurricane; her wonderful daughters, Fawn (Jonathan) Atkins of Scott Depot; Holli Blackwell of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Val (Fred) Blackwell of Hurricane, Bev (Barry) Wheatcraft of Big Chimney; grandchildren Oliver and Crew Atkins; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

We welcome all who knew Em to celebrate her life by joining her family on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 in the Hearth Room at the Coonskin Clubhouse.

I have so many wonderful memories of the time I spent with Emily. Although we lost touch for many years, those times with Emily are still fresh in my mind. From the time she tried to pluck my eyebrows (which didn’t go well), to the ice cubes and ear piercing (ditto as with the eyebrows) to the time in 1973 when I watched Elvis in Aloha from Hawaii with Emily on the big new colored TV Emily’s dad had bought. I came to her house to watch the show after having had nose surgery but when I got all excited (Elvis does that to me) Emily’s mom had to put cold packs on my nose because it started bleeding. We had many laughs over those memories. I will always cherish these. Although we lost an angel here on earth, Heaven gained a special one. Prayers and healing thoughts to all those she leaves behind,

Dolores Blackwell

I always think of how creative Emily was and could make a house look so beautiful. Also has beautiful daughters and grandchildren. I have fond memories of our time in Florida when the girls were young. Many fond memories.

I met Emily when I transferred to Herbert Hoover High School in the 10th grade. She and Sue Wolfe Callis and I would take my mom's car out in the evening and just park the car and put in 8 track tapes and sing our hearts out. I felt so accepted by her parents when I would visit at their home. Wonderful memories. I reconnected with Emily when I moved back to WV and we continued to stay in touch, although not often enough. Since she and her mother moved to Hurricane, she and I would talk via Facebook private messenger and share recipes. I am sincerely sorry for her family for her loss, although she will no longer be in pain and with her dear father now. See you in Heaven my friend!
