Obituary for James Anthony "Jim" Caroli
James "Jim" Anthony Caroli, 74, of Charleston, W.Va., formerly of Clarksburg, W.Va., died February 20, 2019 after a long illness. He was born at home in Summit Park, W.Va., February 22, 1944. His parents were the late Daniel and Rose (Romano) Caroli.
In addition to his parents, his wife Barbara (Ferrando) Caroli and sister Mary Bombardiere preceded Mr. Caroli in death.
Mr. Caroli is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Chuck Stodola, and grandchildren Jonathan, Catherine and Rebecca, also of Charleston. He loved knowing about his grandchildren's involvements in his last years.
Also he is survived by siblings Catherine Caroli, Nancy (William) Audia, Victoria Ayoob, and Joseph Caroli, all of Clarksburg, and John (Connie) Caroli, of Bridgeport. Mr. Caroli enjoyed several friends among the staff and residents at his assisted living.
Mr. Caroli, a 1963 graduate of Victory High School, was a member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Elkview, W.Va. and formerly of Sacred Heart in Salem, W.Va. Previously he was a member of the Sons of Italy and a firemen in the Salem Volunteer Fire Department.
He was the owner of Jim Caroli Custom Meat Cutting and Jim Caroli Construction. Before that he worked at Garden Fresh waiting on meat customers when one had to ask for their cuts of meat. That was before self-serve coolers. Jim learned to cut meat from a left-handed cutter. When he left there Jim was making $1.35 per hour.
His construction trade was learned from his brothers and some on his own. His late wife Barbara often explained, "Someone would say 'Can you...?' and he'd look in books to figure it out."
Jim, always helpful and creative, did odd jobs around his Salem parish.
Visitation with the family will be 4:30 - 6 p.m. Friday, March 1 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Elkview, W.Va. A funeral Mass will begin at 6 p.m. with Fr. Tijo George officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Clarksburg Mission or the Lower Elk River Ministerial Association (LERMA).
A private interment will be in the Clarksburg area.
