Obituary for Ronald Leon Carnes

Ronald Leon Carnes, 91, of Elkview passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018.

He retired from Union Carbide after 39 years, two months and 24 days of service. He was the Supervisor of the machinist shop, was part of the cost team which focused on lengthening equipment life. He was also part of the riggers, other mechanic shop teams, and created a device for Union Carbide for the polyethylene unit.

He attended Pinch Ridge Memorial Church for 47 years, where he taught the adult Sunday School class, and was a trustee for the church. Ronald, always gave rides to Church, to help people who wanted to attend Church, could do so. He was a 1946 graduate of Elkview High School, and enjoyed videoing life events. He helped form the Blue Creek Train Reunion Organization. Ronald, proudly served his country in the US Navy, from March 26, 1945 to July 10, 1946 during World War II. He was part of the mission to study aquatic life on Bikini Island before they tested the atomic bomb there.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Kay Smith; parents, Lonzo Ellis Carnes and Verna Alice Keenan Carnes.

Ronald is survived by his loving wife, of 69 years, Betty Kennedy Carnes which were married November 11, 1949. He is also survived by his daughter, Sandy Belcher, and husband, Billy; son-in-law, Tony Smith; grandchildren, Joey and Beth Belcher; great grandchildren, Lance and Mary Kay Belcher.

Service will be 2:00 pm Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 at Hafer Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kennedy and Pastor Doug McClung officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm.
