Charles Raymond Young
Charles Raymond Young, 92, of Charleston, died Friday, August 23, 2013, at Oak Ridge Center following a short illness. Raymond, or Charlie, as he was known to many of his friends, was born August 9, 1921, to the late Charles Berton “Bert” Young and Bessie Gertrude “Gert” Lacy Young.
After graduating from Elk District High School in 1938, he went to work for Dupont where he was a chemical operator for more than 40 years. He served in the Army Air Corp during WW II, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was an avid gardener and willingly shared his bountiful harvests with friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Bond Nichols Young; his brothers, Carl Berton Young and Bennie Paul Young; his sister, Anna Mae Young Pauley; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Young.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles R. Young II and daughter-in-law Jonalee Burgess Young; two granddaughters, Sarah Young of Charleston, and Christina Young Rauhala and husband Kristjan of Winchester, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Grace Rauhala; niece Teresa Pauley Underhill of Charleston; and nephews, Timothy Young, Michael Young, and David Young all of Delaware.
Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1600 Kanawha Blvd East, Charleston with Rev. Randolf Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 61, Clendenin.
Friends may call from 6-8 pm Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
